How to Measure a Garage Tilt Door Tension Spring
1. Measure the Body of the Spring removed from the door and tension released: Exclude the Loops: Measure the length of the spring by focusing only on the coiled body, excluding any loops or hooks at the ends. This is the spring working length.
2. Measure the Wire Diameter: Use a caliper to measure the thickness of the wire that forms the coils. If a caliper isn't available, measure across 10 coils and divide the total by 10 for an accurate wire diameter.
3. Measure the Outside Diameter: Measure the outside diameter of the spring, which includes the thickness of the wire. This is the total diameter from one outer edge of the coil to the opposite outer edge.
Use Proper Tools: A tape measure for length, and a caliper or micrometer for wire and outside diameter, will provide the most accurate results.
